Designed and founded by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia opened its doors in March, 1825, with ten teachers on staff and 68 students. The UVA campus was designed as an “academical village” with ten pavilions; one for each professor’s residence and a hall above it for his classes. These faced a long lawn in rows or ranges, each a different example of classical forms from British and French derivations of Renaissance prototypes. The Rotunda, molded after the Pantheon, was added as the focal point of the campus. It was to house the library and to serve as a place for lectures, religious worship, drawing and music. Jefferson’s dream to place a planetarium in the dome was never realized. One of the first students was Edgar Allen Poe, whose room in the West Range has been restored. In 1895 the Rotunda was gutted by fire and redesigned by Stanford White, but Jefferson’s original design was restored in the 1970’s. The University has grown tremendously since Thomas Jefferson’s time, but the Rotunda remains the intellectual and spiritual heart of the college. The students who make special contributions to the University are rewarded with a room on “The Lawn” in their fourth year. The statue of Jefferson, pictured in the inset, stands on the west side of “The Lawn”.
