The Frederick William Boatwright Memorial Library, named for the University of Richmond’s third president, was completed in the summer of 1955. With its massive Gothic entrance and 140-foot tower, the red brick and limestone-trimmed building is the focal point of the campus. In addition to the library, the original building had a wing for the Virginia Baptist Historical Society. The 37,000 square foot building now has two additions which bring the size to 130,000 square feet. The 1977 four-story addition tripled the seating capacity of the library to 1,000. This addition also freed up space on the ground floor for administrative offices. The space known as the Boatwright Administrative Wing is occupied by the Chancellor’s Office, Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, the Offices of International Education, the Writing Center, and the Academic Skills Center. The 1987 addition houses administrative offices, classrooms, and book stacks. The Lora Robins Gallery, housing a collection of precious gems and metals, was also added at this time. When it was first installed, the carillon, housed in the tower, used to ring to signal the beginning and ending of classes. Now those on the UR campus and surrounding neighborhoods hear the melodious chimes every day at 12:30 and 5:00 p.m.

*Artist’s note: This view is from across Westhampton Lake. Look for the SPIDER in the holly leaves.
