Designed by architect Charles Robinson, construction began in 1909, on what is now known as Monroe Hall. It is one of the first two buildings that comprised the campus, known as the State Normal & Industrial School for Women. (Willard Hall, a dorm, was the 2nd building.) 1911 saw the laying of the cornerstone and the start of the school’s first session. Known as the Administration Building, in 1912, it was named Russell Hall, after the school’s first president, E. H. Russell. In 1922, to honor James Monroe, a resident of Fredericksburg, and the 5th president of the USA, the name was changed to Monroe Hall. Sitting atop a hill, the brick structure, handsome with its white Corinthian columns, is surrounded by large trees. The fountain in front was built in 1987 and is complimented by the Campus Walk. Accenting the halls of Monroe since the 1940s are murals painted by Assistant Professor of Art, Emil Schnellock, and his art students. Monroe Hall, is to Mary Washington, what Burruss Hall is to Virginia Tech and the Rotunda to UVA. The building is the center for all student activities and has been used for everything except a dorm.
